Five centuries of visitors and stories in Antigua.

(City Foundation 1543, by Spanish colonizers)

Located in Antigua Guatemala, a city declared “World Heritage” by United Nations, and surrounded by historical monasteries and convents from the 16th to 18th centuries, is one of Central America´s most charming and picturesque hotels. An architectural treasure of unsurpassed beauty in an oasis of peace, only a few blocks from the “Real Plaza” (central park).

Handcrafted Piece of Art.

CANDELARIA ANTIGUA HOTEL is a remembrance of Antigua`s Colonial Architecture.

The “Casona Candelaria Antigua” as it is known by Antigua´s residents, is full of special details characteristic of the spanish colony buildings. More than twenty of Antigua´s best artisans have worked for years in many disciplines to restore and complete this piece of colonial art.

Wood Works

Sculptured wood columns, beams, ceilings and floors made with Guatemalan woods. (Volador, Santa Maria, Cipres)  Doors, windows and wardrobes are made of pure Guatemalan mahogany wood. Carved with baroque motives. All furniture (tables, chairs, mirror frames, lamps, etc..) were carved by Antigua´s artisans hands from mahogany and cedar woods. Leather handicrafts were used too.

Artisan finished hard wood floors. Real wood streaks and veins stand out. (Only wax is used for maintainance of floor boards, as our predecessors did. No polymer varnish used in wood floors.)

Iron Works

Iron forged hinges and doorknobs. Colonizers used hammered iron joints instead of hinges in doors and windows.  Artisans have restored this work forging and hammering each joint to hang each mahogany wood door.

Antigua´s artistic forged balconies.

Sculptured Stone

Hand sculptured stone. Used in stairs, walls, floor and sidewalks.

Pure clay brick restorations. In Guatemala each clay brick is still handcrafted and stewed in firewood ovens. Hand chiseled bricks used in stone columns. Brick by brick artisans gave rounded forms to the architectural columns and vaulted ceilings.  Spanish fired clay tile ceilings. Clay tiles were hand made and stewed in firewood ovens on Guatemala highlands.

Painting Works

Green and Yellow are the characterisic colors used on ceramic works in Antigua, during the spanish colony period.  Color was obtained from metals rust and natural pigments.

Hand painted tiles, with Antigua´s baroque period patterns were used in bathrooms .
Its designs were selected from the facades of the monuments surrounding the Hotel.

Mineral paints with a limestone and salt base were used to paint the Hotel. (City heritage preservation)

Textile Works

Bed and table covers made with an artisan loom. Carpets made with sheep wool by Guatemala highlands indigenous artisans.

The artistic richness showed in each corner of CANDELARIA ANTIGUA HOTEL
defines it as a piece of art worth to be perceived and experienced.
Antigua Guatemala´s heritage must be preserved .
